To begin, start forming a habit of attending weekly Mass at any Catholic Church. It is not necessary to know all about the Catholic faith to go. Begin some self-study. FORMED is an excellent, free resource; we recommend Symbolon and The Search programs for starters. There are also plenty of reading materials available that we could give you upon request. See podcasts, book, apps and social media recommendations below. Both parishes have a lending library.
The Catholic Mass can be a different experience of worship for someone. Feel free to participate however you feel comfortable.
We ask you to refrain from receiving Communion, which is reserved for Catholics in good standing in the Church. You may stay seated during Holy Communion or cross your arms across your chest to receive a blessing.
If you would like an explanation of what to expect at Mass, we can discuss that with you and/or provide reading material. Reach out to us today!
The process begins with inquiry and discernment, which involves learning about the Catholic faith. This process can take months, sometimes years, depending on each person’s journey. Classes usually run from September to Easter (April/May). Private study/meetings can be considered based on your situation.
Once you have decided to become Catholic, the usual process involves the OCIA (Order of Christian Initiation for Adults).
Contact and meet with the priest to tell him of your desire to become Catholic.
You will become a Catechumen (for the unbaptized) or a Candidate (for the baptized).
Catechumens will enter the Church on the Easter Vigil and must attend the Rite of Election for unbaptized at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Lafayette (first Sunday in Lent). Catechumens will receive baptism, confirmation and first Holy Communion at the Easter Vigil. Confession should be done shortly after.
Candidates can enter at the Easter Vigil also or at the priest’s discretion. Candidates will receive confirmation and first Holy Communion. Confession will need to be done prior to this.
